Sea Turtle Response Training
At AMC, our Marine Biologists conduct sea turtle response training sessions for resort staff across various departments. These sessions equip staff with the knowedlge and skills to respond safely and effectively if they encountered an injured sea turtle. Training covers key topics such as who to contact, how to safely untangle a turtle from a ghost net, and how to handle and transport them with minimal stress.

Resorts will need to liase with their construction teams to build transport boxes for the injured sea turtle if relocation to the nearest rehabilitation facility is needed. Coordination is essential to determine which facility is closest and has available space for the injured turtle. We strive to make these sessions informal, fun, and interactive, encouraging participants to ask questions and engage in demonstrations.

In 2024, we conducted sea turtle response training at three resorts including Kuredu Island Resort in Lhaviyani Atoll, Cora Cora Maldives in Raa Atoll, and Velaa Private Island in Noonu Atoll. Additionally, our Resort Marine Biologists provide similar training to staff at their respective resorts at Six Senses Kanuhura in Lhviyani and Amilla Maldives in Baa Atoll.

Looking ahead, we aim to expand our training to more resorts and revisit those where staff turnover has occured, ensuring that resort teams are always prepared to handle sea turtle emergencies.

Resort Guest Visits to AMC
Our centre welcomes resort guests as part of their excursions to explore marine conservation in action. We currently collaborate with Atmosphere Kanifushi Maldives, Kuredu Island Resort, Kudadoo Private Island, and Komandoo Resort and Spa, all located in Lhaviyani Atoll. We hope to expand our connections so that we can include even more resorts in the future.

If you're visiting the Maldives, you can contact your resort to inquire about arranging a visit to our centre. Entry is $15 per adult (free for children under 12), and your contribution directly supports our conservation efforts. The visit includes a presentation by one of our Marine Biologists or Marine Biology Interns, a guided tour of our centre, and an introduction to our current turtle patients.

These visits are a fantastic way to raise international awareness about the challenges facing the Maldivian marine envrionment. They encourage visitors to make envrionmentally concious choices during their stay in the Maldives and beyond. Additionally, these interactions help us promote our mission and share the impactful work we do with a global audience!

Four tourists, these visits offer a unique and memorable addition to their holiday - providing a rare opportunity to learn about sea turtles and the intricate process of rehabilitating them when injured due to anthropogenic threats.

In 2023, we welcomed over 1,300 resort guests to our centre, showcasing the incredible reach of our awareness efforts through these visits.
