What is the Allied Community
Bins Project?

The issue

The Maldives as a nation confronts a severe waste management crisis, resulting in substantial accumulations of debris on local islands such as Naifaru. Island communities throughout the archipelago struggle with waste disposal due to their geographic isolation, constrained land area, and prohibitive inter-island transportation costs. Compounding these logistical challenges is a prevalent attitude of indifference toward proper waste disposal among some local residents, who often discard trash directly into the environment due to limited awareness of ecological impacts.

The absence of comprehensive waste management infrastructure has normalized improper disposal practices, with littering becoming commonplace in many communities. Without accessible alternatives or sufficient education about environmental consequences, many islanders have developed disposal habits that prioritize convenience over sustainability, further exacerbating the pollution issues facing these vulnerable island ecosystems.

Our solution

We partnered with Allied Insurance Company, and with funding we were able to implement multiple sets of community bins around local public hot-spots on Naifaru.

These bins, located at Velaa and Sunset beach on our island, are placed alongisde large signs encoruaging locals and tourists to place their general waste into the bins, or to bring their plastic bottles to our centre to be recycled.

We hope that with increased places for people to responsibly discard their trash, we will reduce the amount of litter on our beautiful beaches which is destined for the ocean.

Reducing both terrestrial and marine litter and pollution is something we work tirelessly to achieve here at Atoll Marine Centre.

We thank Allied Insurance Company for providing us with the funds to implement these bins and complete this project.

Always remember to dispose of your waste respectfully for your environment! The turtles will thank you.
