Lhaviyani Turtle Festival
Lhaviyani Turtle Festival is an annual event organized by Naifaru Juvenile, in collaboration with Atoll Marine Centre and Atoll Volunteers, since 2016.
Over the years, the festival has grown into an event that attracts more than 3,000 people, making it the largest marine community outreach initiative outside of Malé. It is a highlight of our calendar every year, and one that continues to inspire and unite people around marine conservation.
At its heart, the festival is for school students, the next generation of environmental stewards. By instilling environmental responsibility in young people, we hope to create a ripple effect that reaches their families, friends, and communities. Our goal is to welcome at least 20 students from every school in Lhaviyani Atoll, as well as schools from neighboring atolls such as Raa, Baa, and Noonu, and at least one from Malé. As the festival grows, we aim to host even more schools from across the country.
Since 2023, the festival has expanded into a two-day event:
-
Day One – Atoll Marine Symposium: A platform bringing together NGOs, councils, tourism operators, and community members to discuss pressing marine environmental issues, exchange knowledge, and strengthen partnerships for collective action.
-
Day Two – Festival Day: A vibrant celebration where schools, NGOs, and organizations host interactive marine awareness stalls. Fun games, activities, and competitions create excitement while educating about ocean conservation.
In addition, local craft and food stalls, along with traditional dance performances, showcase Maldivian culture—making the festival not only educational but also a joyful and memorable community celebration.
We are extremely proud of the Lhaviyani Turtle Festival. It is a unique opportunity to raise awareness on a large scale, to inspire action, and to show that by coming together, we can protect our marine environment and build a more sustainable future.
